#COICAWomen – Series of 5 videos with messages from Amazonian leaders

“Everywhere, we act for the rights of women and a life without violence».

Pastaza, Ecuador | From February 21st to 23rd, 2019, 40 indigenous women leaders from 9 Amazon countries and 2 Central American countries met in Yaku Runa, a small plurinational community in Pastaza Province , Ecuador, for the first meeting of the Women’s and Family Council of the Coordinator of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin, COICA.

During that meeting, we made this series of #COICAWomen short films with enterviews and messages from some of the participating Amazonian women. Here we invite you to see and share them.

Sherry Ann (Guyana), raises her voice! «I am very proud to be an indigenous woman. I want my people to know that we must be strong and we have to continue our struggle.»
Claudette Labonte (French Guyana) raises her voice! «My struggle is to enforce, guarantee, the rights of indigenous peoples.»
Clemencia Herrera (Colombia) raises her voice!: «Stop saying «I can’t», everything can be done. Amazonian indigenous women have to learn to read, write and use knowledge from outside to apply in our territory».
Elvia Dagua (Ecuador), raises her voice !: «Women were always last, now women are first. Here in Ecuador we want to be a single thought, a single heart and a single fist ».
Carol González (Colombia) raises her voice !: «The forest is our house, our home, the place where we stock up on food, it is our life».

The meeting was a joint effort of the Coordinator of Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon Basin – COICA, of Conservación Internacional Ecuador and of the Weaving Ties project of Fundación ALDEA.
